M-Fence-C : Fencing guide information
How to erect a panel fence:
(1) : Remove old fencing, cut back shrubs, define the fence line with a taut string.
(2) : Assuming 6 ft tall fence, dig a hole to accomodate post plus atleast 2.5 inch gap for all sides of the post. Depth 2 ft in normal ground or 30 inches for soft conditions. Compact base. To set post at correct height, place panel in position or measure off panel height and consider site levels (is the ground mostly level? does it climb? or drop? Work with the ground, try to make steps up and down consistant.
(3) : Cut post to correct length if necessary, place in centre of hole upright both ways. Aim to have a slight gap between string line and fence. Fill with 20mm ballast or equiv, 9 :1 cement ratio, reasonably dry. Ram / compact all 4 edges. Stop concrete mix 6'' below ground level, finish with stones / rocks + rammed soil.
(4) : Attach panel by holding in position and fixing with panel clips or 75 mm nails. Nail option is the preferred professional's choice (with the majority of panels pre drilling is best or a degree of cracking will probably occur). Remember to check the panel for upright, square position as many are not square. If there is a panel that is truly out then you can either reject it, rebuild it or compromise, just bare in mind that if there are more than 3 panels remaining then this one will make all the others come off of square.
(5) : With panel fixed you can now repeat the process again and again!
